When I started off in the radio hobby it was with a simple 10 channel Unden BC142XL scanner. It satisfied me for a while. But after listening to the now defunct Larkfield Scanner & Shortwave Radio Listeners net I found myself wanting more. So I invested in a Uniden BC855XLT. It had 50 channels and allowed me to listen to AM aircraft. This made me quite happy, but I eventually realized that I wanted more. So I upgraded to Realistic Pro2035. From there I owned a succession of scanners leading up to my current one which is a BCD536HP. I love this radio. It has all sorts of features and an incredible memory capacity.
As far as shortwave my interest started while listening to the very same net. I purchased a DAK DMR3000. It was a nice little radio, but I came to realize I really needed something with single-sideband. As a result I picked up a Sony 7600G. Let me tell you this was a cool little radio. But I kept hearing about this Sony 2010 and I had to have it. So I went ahead and bought one. It came with a battery meter which seemed quite handy. Whenever I turned the radio I checked the battery level and they were always strong. Well let me tell you something, I am not so sure that meter was all that reliable. It all started when I turned on the radio only discover it was making a horrible noise across all of the bands. I turned it off and opened up the battery compartment and guess what I discovered? They had leaked! Never again would I rely on such a feature. My current shortwave radios are Sangean ATS909 and a Sony 7600 GR. I had been looking into a Tecsun PL880, but I may wait until after they release the PL990. They both have features l want. But the 990 is larger that is something that appeals to me.
