On November 13th my girlfriend and I went to back to the Bayard Cutting Arboretum which I covered in an earlier post in order to view the autumn colors while there still leaves on the trees.
In the days leading up to our date the forecast called for storms which had been forecasted to last about 30 minutes. Despite this we decided to follow through with our plans figuring we could find hang out in the main building or gazebo right next to it.
When we arrived it was a beautiful autumn day with partly sunny skies. As we walked around I took pictures of anything that caught my attention.
As time went on I noticed the wind started to pick up and the clouds began to increase. This suggested that the storm was making its approach. As it it got closer to 3:00 pm we decided to walk over to a gazebo near the main building. The rain started to fall by the time we arrived at there. It wasn’t too long until we started to hear thunder.
The winds started to as the storm got even closer which made it feel quite chilly. At one point my girlfriend received a call advising her that we should seek shelter since a tornado waning had been issued.
Not 5 minutes later our phones went off and I knew that it was an alert for the tornado warning. We walked over to the main building only to discover the doors were locked and since neither of drove we felt we had no choice but to go back to where we were to ride out the storm. When the rain finally started to let up it seemed like we dodged a bullet. We then walked back to the parking to wait for our ride home.
When I got home I put the news on see what was being said about the storm. As I watched the coverage of the damage that happened I knew we were lucky. In the days that followed the National Weather service confirmed a total of six tornados had hit Long Island. One of which was not that far from where we were.
In end I am glad we went since we got to enjoy all the colors autumn has to offer. In fact I hope we go again next year. But next time we will have to put more thought into the weather forecast when there is there is a chance of storms.
